Sex-crime accusations carry consequences beyond the sentence, including registration. These cases call for discretion and a careful look at the evidence from the start.

A first offense is usually a misdemeanor, up to six months in county jail and a fine up to $1,000, and requires sex offender registration. A prior conviction or entering an inhabited dwelling can make it a felony.

PC 290.018

Willfully failing to register, update, or re-register as required under the Sex Offender Registration Act.

The ranges above summarize the statutes as maximums and minimums, not predictions. Enhancements, prior convictions, and the specific facts can change them, and many cases resolve with diversion, reduced charges, or dismissal.
